Hello Great Family,
It’s mid-January, where goals go to die. We have passed the date where people traditionally give up on all their New Year's goals. Diets are out the window, local gyms are not as crowded, Bible reading plans sit collecting dust and prayer time has been replaced with old habits that mindlessly waste time.
Those goals you set were important to you when you set them—and they still are. However, I want to emphasize your Spiritual goals. I am encouraging each person in the great family at Oakwood to identify where they are in their discipleship journey and then specify what is needed to move forward. So, if you’re starting to backslide a bit, here are some insights to help you stay on track.
Progress, Not Perfection
The problem with goals is that we often set them with an all-or-nothing mindset. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work like that. Slip-ups and setbacks happen, and they aren’t signs of failure. They’re part of the journey. Missed a day? Start again tomorrow. Off track? Reset and keep moving forward. Every step you take, no matter how small, is progress.
Stay Committed to Your “Why”
Why did you set your goal in the first place? Revisit the heart of what you want. At the heart of every follower of Jesus is a desire to grow, serve and connect with other believers. If your heart is telling you that you need to develop and become more like Jesus then that is your “Why”. Your “why” is your fuel—reconnect with it.
How to Keep Going
Here are a few simple strategies to maintain your momentum (from “depth not width” online):
Break It Down: Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into bite-sized pieces. Small wins build confidence.
Track Your Progress: Write it down, whether it’s in a journal, an app, or a sticky note. Seeing your progress, no matter how small, reinforces your efforts.
Find Accountability: Share your goals with someone you trust. A friend, coach, or community can help you stay on track.
Celebrate Wins: Recognize your progress. Every step forward is worth celebrating.
Give Yourself Grace: Life happens. Missing a day doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it just means you need to start again.
You Have What It Takes
Achieving your Spiritual goals is about more than checking a box. It’s about proving to yourself that you can be spiritually disciplined, that you’re capable of growth, and that person God is transforming you into is worth the effort. The obstacles you’re facing aren’t there to stop you; they’re there to strengthen you. Keep going!
